Basic service and maintenance #1 - chain and gears.

Anyone should be able to do a basic spring check/prep/small service at home. It's for your own good, the person in question :). There is good practice for this and that comes with simply starting to do some things yourself.

First and foremost is cleanliness! For this, Juice Lubes' effective and eco-friendly bike wash program will serve you perfectly. The article on what and how to wash your bike is here.

Measure your chain!

Gauges are not expensive, each one has a diagram that tells you when the chain is OK and when it's not. Replacing the chain early is cheaper than replacing the complete drive. And the drive will last several chains if it has had enough care.

When was the last time you measured your chain? If the dipstick fails and you don't have an answer to the question in the sense that you probably never have since you got "that" bike, ask another question. How old is the bike in question and how much mileage have I put on it? Chains today are titanic, serving 11 or 12 speed systems. They don't hold up like the ones our dads used to run on a six-wheeler. If the answer regarding the age of the bike is, say, a year, and the mileage was commensurate with that, it may be that just replacing the chain will be enough. You'll have to figure out how to balance that question for yourself. You know how much mileage you've done, how, where, in what. You also won't find out the day the dipstick first dropped, so you probably won't find the answer to how much the chain has already pushed its way into the pinions in your opinion of your shenanigans :).

So you may be faced with a dilemma - chain only or chain-pinion-cassette - question mark.

If it's not clear, even by a layman's look at the gear teeth, that there's something very wrong with them, try the chain first.

Shorten it with a riveter to the same number of links as the previous one.

Don't push the whole rivet out with the riveter, just pull it with feeling until it is at the edge of the link and can be pulled apart. Then remove the links that are excess, turn the riveter and push the rivet back in. Pay attention to make sure that the rivet is in place correctly from both sides of the link. Swinging the jammed area sideways with reasonable force can be done.

If the new chain is making mischief on the pinions - especially the ones you generally use most often, or on the derailleur - buy both the cassette and the derailleur.

With regular chain checking, the cassette and derailleur will outlast you for several chains, assuming timely chain replacement. It is impossible to say exactly how much. Every converter and every cassette is different.

When we get our hands dirty, pause at the cassette. A puller and whip are also relatively inexpensive tools, and as a gauge they are a one-time investment. Pull the cartridge, clean the nut and what you can handle with a rag or brush. Spread a piece of clean rag or paper all over the cartridge as its construction allows and in a way that, by simple logic, ensures you can reassemble it.

This gives you the opportunity to clean the pinions, the rings between the pinions, the nut perfectly, and to see if or how much the nut is bruised from the pinions. Reassembly is simple and the cartridge will be as good as new. Keep in mind that the lubricant-chain lube is the ultimate abrasive paste, which is critical to the durability of these components. Swap out your cartridge from time to time anyway. And even on the bike, clean it and the chain between rides imrvére!

How to prevent premature wear as far as possible? Simply by cleanliness. Click on the products in question as you read, we highly recommend them, they will improve your options and the elegance of the process. They will allow the treatment in question to be done quickly and efficiently and preferably without getting a pig's ear. Juice Lubes offers a comprehensive line of products that allow you to keep your chain, gears and wheel perfectly clean.
