Protocycles pair of ambassadors for this year is Frenk and Bečvi and this year they will be riding races, bike parks, trails, etc. on Pivot Firebird 29 bikes.Both Frenk and Bečvi have it partly mounted "out of the box", because Pivot Firebird 29 is already from the factory ready for races. Let's introduce both of them in more detail.


Bečvi

David "Bečvi" Bečvář is officially new to Protocycles, unofficially for longer. He's not here to shred records or impress with results, but to put his Pivot Firebird 29 through all the rigors of this year's Blindur and ES in style. Like Frenk, Bechvi is a "guy of the people" who rides beautifully and who you can stop by anytime and quiz about anything you want to know about the Pivot Firebird 29.

Bečvi is from Milevsko. Yes, from Vápenka. He started his "biking life" by getting a BMX at the age of 15. Terrible scrap for a few bucks from his first job. At that time there was a big group in Milevsk, but nobody knew how to ride a bike. Whoever jumped three pallets and got over the funbox was king.

Later on, the world got among "those guys" at Vápenka, and Bečvi was swallowed up by it. Seeing Stepan Herinek stretch supermans and spin 360s when Bečvi himself still couldn't jump over a hole.

Together with Onys (Martin Čapek), Štěpán and others, later Vápenka, building new jumps and of course riding, they basically lived.

The "sobering up" came in 2014, when Bečvi's daughter was born. Build a house, plant a tree, etc...

It was such a time consuming period that he didn't get on a bike for almost 4 years. When that wore off, he dusted off the bike and realized he was tired of riding dirts... almost 10 years was enough. Stepan was going through a similar "bike crisis". Word got out and they got an enduro. Trails, bikeparks, rides, the versatility... he got hooked on riding and today, if he's not at work or spending time with his daughter, he's back on his bike.

This season he plans to enjoy his health above all. Actually, all the following ones too :). Of the races, he plans to ride the EC and Blindur this year. He would also like to ride some bike parks, trail sites, repeat Finale Ligure - depending on time.

Stylish riding guy on Pivot, that's Bečvi. And how's Bechvi riding the Firebird?

"The short rear set-up makes the bike perfectly controllable and legible in both the jumps and the downhill, plus combined with the Superboost rear axle the whole rear set-up is beautifully stiff for a 29" ratio. I appreciate the low centre, it gives the bike stability on fast trails and jumps. Another priority for me was the Stack and Reach value so that I didn't have to hunch over the bike, bend my back and overall make it a bike for the big boys. True the smaller size would stack up better in tight corners, but comfort won out. And even into that corner it ended up being surprisingly easy considering the overall wheelbase. An important aspect for me was the ability to use a 200mm seatpost so that the top position was comfortable for pedaling while still allowing plenty of room over the bike when retracting on descents. The cool thing is the permeability of the plush tires. I'm running a 2.4 in the rear, but the margin in permeability is priceless when riding in the wet when the tires are encased in a layer of mud. I also have to single out the overall quieting of the bowden, chain and the handling of the frame inputs and outputs. Because a quiet bike is a fast bike, hahaha. And finally, the DW-link. I haven't ridden a better suspension system. It doesn't rock up hills and rides beautifully. The lever to close it wouldn't even need to be on the shock. And downhill, just iron. And most importantly, the bike is beautiful! "

With a few exceptions, the Bechvi has a Pivot fitted "out of the box".

Pivot Firebird 29 with Fox Factory 170mm fork and Fox Float X2 shock (162mm travel). The stem is a Chromag HiFi, the handlebar-grips and saddle were left Pivot. 9point8 Fall Line seatpost with 200mm travel. Galfer brake pads and Chromag Scarab pedals. Shifting and brakes are Shimano XTR-XT. The bike is both protected and adorned with AMS decals and the OneUp EDC tool is in the fork neck.


Frenk

It would seem that everyone knows Frenk, and in the bubble it probably is, but do you really know him?

Frenk got his start in BMX, dirtama. Back then there wasn't a lot of scrambling, often everyone rode everything within the discipline. Frenk was part of the "second" wave of BMX along with names like Pánka, Vondráček, Kohout, Plas, Herink and others.

He also took care of his dirt area for nine years. It made a name for itself and in 2008 it hosted a successful dirt-jam on the legacy of which Frenk hosted the MR in dirt the following year. It was so challenging to organize that Frenk was only in the role of organizer.

MTB followed afterwards. Again, everyone rode everything, so 100/100 strokes were ridden, jumped, ridden.

Through Crab, and thanks to his acquaintance with Trnka, with whom he took a couple of dirty photos in the past, he snuck into the then Kraslice races, where he almost died. This was before the wave of "enduro" as we know it today and it shaped his future path.

Not long after that he started building a house, which took him three years, when he was practically never on a bike.

When he had a place to live, he got back on his bike, went straight back to enduro and started "training". Frenk is a talented grassroots rider and thanks to that, his collaboration with Protocycles started around that time.

Frenk finished last year's Enduroseries season with a second place in the category, and was usually in plus or minus tenth place amongst everyone.

This year we will see him on the Pivot Firebird 29. His plans are in the level of a working guy - he is looking forward to the whole EC, the highlight for him will be the MR in Kliny, he would like to go to races abroad for experience and he is very much looking forward to the Trophy of Nations in Finale, where he will form a team with Vanik and Radek Kulha in the hobby category.

There will bea tank top! And how is his Pivot Firebird 29?

"The geometry of the Firebird 29 is very intuitive and I really like the DW-link function, how the bike goes behind the pedal. Another detail I felt is the precise directional control, the bike responds to even slight changes in direction."

Said Frenk. Interestingly, Bečvi says eight words a year and Frenk doesn't shut up. It doesn't look like that from this article:).

Frenk's Firebird 29 has the company's suspension - Fox Factory forks with 170mm of travel and Fox DP2 shock with 162mm of travel. Brake pads are Galfer. The seatpost is, of course, a Canadian 9point8 Fall Line with 175mm travel. Steering is handled by a Chromag HiFi 35 stem along with Chromag BZA bars and Chromag Squarewave grips. Pedals are Chromag Scarab. A cool detail is the AMS protective covers matching the AMS mudguard. They not only protect, but also add a touch of flair.

Shifting is Shimano.
